Electroacupuncture proved significantly more effective than gabapentin for treatment of hot flashes in breast cancer survivors in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Acupuncture was far better tolerated as well. The rate of treatment-related adverse events was higher in patients randomized to gabapentin than to women assigned to electroacupuncture, sham acupuncture, or placebo, Dr. Jun J. Mao reported at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Read more

Traditional 'smart soup' shows promise in fighting Alzheimer's

A traditional Chinese medicine known as smart soup (聰明湯) could help in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, scientists on the mainland believe.

The simple treatment helped relieve and even reverse Alzheimer's symptoms in mice that had been genetically modified to acquire the disease, researchers with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology in Shanghai found.  Read more..

The 2014 Tour De France is underway. Hundreds of elite cyclists are racing through the picturesque mountains of France in an amazing feat of endurance. Although I am not a big cycling fan, I am a huge fan of acupuncture! So, I was thrilled to learn that super star cyclist Alberto Contador is using acupuncture to help him with his knee pain during the race. He injured his knee early in the race and uses acupuncture to combat the pain and inflammation. Read more

A new MRI study finds acupuncture and electroacupuncture effective for treating brain tissue injuries and neurological disorders caused by cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI). This type of brain damage is caused by the return of blood circulation to the brain after a period of ischemia, restricted blood supply. The sudden return of blood to oxygen and circulation deprived brain tissues causes inflammation and oxidative stress.  Read more

Acupuncture, Real or Not, Eases Side Effects of Cancer Drugs

Both acupuncture and sham acupuncture were effective in reducing menopausal symptoms in women being treated with aromatase inhibitors for breast cancer, a small randomized trial found. Joint and muscle pain, hot flashes and night sweats are common side effects of those estrogen-lowering drugs.

The trial, published online in Cancer, randomized 47 breast cancer patients to eight weekly sessions of either real or sham acupuncture. Read more here
